Wolfgang Herzig *

(born 1941 in Judenburg) „Gründonnerstag“, (Green Thursday), monogrammed, dated HW 71 and artist’s mark, oil on canvas, 79 x 133 cm, framed, (K)

Illustrated and listed in: Herzig/mit Gedichten von Wolfgang Bauer, published by Adolf Holzhausen, Vienna 1995, full-page coloured illustration page 70, catalogue raisonné page 188 (1971). In 1970 a larger exhibition of Wolfgang Herzig’s work was showcased at the Vienna Secession, which Kristian Sotriffer in his press review aptly titled „Disturbed Idyll“. On the narrative and formal definition of the image Otto Breicha suggests: „His opinion is not accidental, and he is persistent in his attempts to realise it in his pictures. (....) His scenes of daily life are so keenly directed and as precisely composed as possible. Herzig, a Viennese painter from verdant Styria doesn’t think much of the baroque boasting which many confuse with the Austrian character.“ Of his method of working, Herzig wrote in 1970, „How do I paint? (....) My pictures are built up in layers, in the manner of the old masters. For I place great importance on durability and permanence. Sometimes I work on four or five pictures simultaneously. This method of working is exceedingly important to me,“ ...Irene Nierhaus - from the above literature.
